The world seems to get more chaotic by the day. The Amish Christian community however may find themselves largely unaffected. The Amish have often been subject to mockery in the media, such as the Weird Al Yankovic music video ‘Amish Paradise’. However, they may end up better off than many of us.
Quiet Living.
To be clear, The Amish are a Christian group known for their simple living and plain dress. They are typically reluctant to adopt modern conveniences. Their origin dates to the late 17th century in Europe. During the Protestant Revolution, the Amish settled the United States, with communities in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana. Their lifestyle is focused on having a strong emphasis on community, family, and manual labor. With this, they are often avid in husbandry and agriculture. Their education typically ends at the eighth grade, with a focus on practical skills necessary for their way of life. Despite the perception of isolation, the Amish have adapted in various ways to balance their traditions with the modern world, selectively incorporating technology only if it aligns with their values.
The Turmoil does not End.
Thus far in 2024, as this is an election year and troubling time in our country, we have had assassination attempts on a presidential candidate, wars going on in other countries, economic worries and volatile political battles. This is just some of the turmoil that has been going on in the country lately. The Amish community however, being largely separate from society and therefore not dependent upon it, it is possible that they are unbothered. Their independent lifestyle, though tedious to some, is an advantage at this time. For example, recently the Southeast had a record Hurricane. Hurricane Helene led to millions being without power for some time across the East Coast. A community that lives an Amish lifestyle, however, could possible not be as affected by this inconvenience.
The Amish lifestyle also seems to benefit mentally right now in comparison to the rest of the country. They would probably trade the popular trend of doom scrolling for a closer connection to nature. The emphasis on living simply and eschewing modern technology helps reduce stress and distractions, allowing for a more focused and intentional life. 
Independent Skills cannot be Taken.
In early October of this year, a longshoremen workers strike occurred along the East Coast as well. These strikes can have significant economic impacts, as they disrupt the flow of goods and commodities, affecting supply chains and leading to potential shortages. Since the Amish prioritize sustainability and self-sufficiency, they grow their own food and make their own goods. In other words, this is yet another category in which the community would be unbothered by even a massive workers strike. Though we are not all called to join an Amish community. It is possible that rather than laughing at them or viewing them as weird, we could learn from them.
